In this beginner friendly watercolor painting class, we will open up with an introduction to the watercolor medium, learning different thicknesses of mixtures and how to mix natural looking colors.
After that, we will paint a simple but beautiful landscape and practice the basic washes in watercolor. This pasture scene involves a few fundamental techniques in watercolor:
- How to apply flat wash - Apply washes to a large area and make it look smooth, such as the sky of this painting
- Wet-on-wet - Apply second coat of paint when the first coat is still wet. This is how we will paint the soft and fluffy clouds
- Glazing - Apply second coat of paint when the first coat fully dries. This allows us to achieve the sharp edges of the buildings and defined shapes of the trees
- Dry-brush technique - Intentionally remove moistures from brush to achieve textured lines, such as those seen in the fields of this painting
For each technique, you will first see me do it with detailed explanation and then you will do it, with the option of practicing first on a spare piece of paper. As we go along, you will also learn tips on composition, creating depth, mixing vivid colors, how to keep the painting look fresh and avoid overworking.
ATTN: Although this workshop doesn't require prior experience, it is however quite involved and thus not ideal for young children. Please contact me prior to reserving the workshop for kids under 10 yrs old.
