10/02 at 6pm: "Fall Lake" Watercolor Class with Ina Xi

In this beginner friendly watercolor painting class, we will open up with an introduction to the watercolor medium, learning different thicknesses of mixtures and how to mix natural looking colors.

After that, we will paint a peaceful scene of the autumnal lake in watercolor. This simple yet elegant painting allows us to learn a few fundamental techniques in watercolor:

• How to apply graded wash - Apply washes to a large area and create subtle transitions in colors, such as the sky of this painting
• Joining colors - Note the forested hills have all types of vibrant fall colors, that is done by alternating between different colors as you paint the forest, creating cohesive yet distinct forms and colors.
• Wet-on-wet - Note the reflections of the trees are softer and fuzzier than the trees above the ground. That is because we applied these colors when the bottom layer has not dried. We will cover this technique as we go through the painting process
• Lifting - Note there are certain "breaks" in the water indicated by the soft, horizontal lines. These are achieved by removing paint using a clean brush while the surface is damp. 

For each step of the painting, you will first see me do it with detailed explanation and then you will do it, with the option of practicing first on a spare piece of paper. As we go along, you will also learn tips on composition, creating depth, mixing vivid colors, how to keep the painting look fresh and avoid overworking. 

Cost include supplies

All painting supplies are included in this class, so you can just show up and jump right in. If you have an ongoing practice in watercolor, feel free to bring your favorite supplies. I'm also happy to recommend specific supplies based on your painting objectives. 

ATTN: Although this workshop doesn't require prior experience, it is however quite involved and thus not ideal for young children. Please contact me prior to reserving the workshop for kids under 10 yrs old.
